I had a chance to peruse a Pottery Barn catalog recently. I know that a lot of bloggers have been making their own version of Pottery Barn offerings, so I looked at it with that in mind, wondering what new projects I would see online soon.
I noticed that it wasn’t always the products that make the room appealing. The windows and molding play a huge difference in the way the room looks. The other thing I noticed is that all of the rooms have something green and living in them–and it’s usually not flowers.
I love flowers. I would love fresh flowers in every room in my house. Flowers aren’t always growing in my garden, however. Sometimes, it’s just something green.
And that’s okay.
Fresh greenery can help your spirit, too.
In many of the pictures, the green living thing was just branches. It’s the same with the interior home pictures that you’ve pinned on Pinterest. Look carefully, and you’ll see the way that simple cut branches can make a room look elegant.
I like to trim my euonymus bushes and put them in jars, and march them down the center of the table. They are fun in a windowsill, too.
Another super easy option is to cut leafy branches from a tree and put them in a tall vase or jar, and place it on a mantel, on your piano, on a table, or your bathroom counter.
Both of these options are simple arrangements that can brighten your day.
Here is what I’ve cut from my garden in the image above:
These are euonymus branches. They look similar to boxwood and I grow them as hedges in the garden. Eventually some will be tall enough to shape into spheres. When they grow taller or wider than you want them, give them a trim and bring them indoors. As long as the water is changed out, these should last three weeks indoors. These ones are contained in a jar that contained sauce from the store (the empty jar was given to me).
Brighten your day today with something living from your garden!
What a lovely idea! And I love your collection of containers/vases.

Ah, but what is extra lovely is your skill as a photographer. You show us so wonderfully that less is more.
Such a lovely idea to brighten a room. I am love this!
I love your arrangements – so pretty! What a wonderful way to use the pruned branches which I would otherwise just throw in the yard waste!
This is brilliant. And so true. I am looking at the Pottery Barn catalogue online now that you said this. Recently I was in a florist shop. They had very tall sticks in a bundle. They looked lovely. I aw the bundle of sticks was about 12 sticks and it was $60! Also they had vases of leaves and they were all very expensive also. And in the second page of pottery barn catalogue the vase in the fireplace is dead sticks…. and looks great. My parents have a farm and Im visiting this week… I am going collecting! Previously I have collected pinecones for displays and they have looked lovely. I think we all just found free decorator items! I am so inspired thank you!
Great idea! I have trees I can take cuttings from. I can’t get past the dusty miller plant looking like my zucchini plant that got white fungus on the leaves 🙂
I am doing this tomorrow. I have rosemary and jasmine I can clip. You are so creative and I love how you love making your home beautiful
Thanks for the good reminder that nothing needs to go to waste. I also enjoy getting inspiration from catalogs. It is amazing how anything looks good in a room with architectural interest. Simplicity also makes each item stand out. I love Sundance catalog for jewelry making inspiration. And j. peterman catalogs just for fiction romance! 🙂
I’ve been trying to get this point into my granddaughter’s head since she turned 13 or so. Go shop in the expensive stores all you want, then take what you’ve seen and find similar styles to put together in the less expensive stores. No, she buys in the expensive stores and think labels matter, at least when it’s clothes. Luckily, she does like to dress her apartment in vintage items, and spends a lot of time finding “antiques” to treasure at home. I am a great believer in decorating with one of a kind items myself. I have framed everything from inexpensive prints to greeting cards that I liked. Blown up photos that we’ve taken ourselves also make it onto the walls here–especially photos taken on local “Garden Walks” or in gardens we’ve visited around the US. Someone else has done all the work and you just snap the photo, with permission, of course. You certainly do have the eye of an artist for arrangement!
These look lovely. The golden wattle is in full bloom here, so I’ve been bringing in cuttings of that for the dining room table. The daffodils, jonquils, and snowdrops are also coming up – they grow wild in a part of our yard. I don’t often think of just bringing in greenery cuttings, though; I’ll have to start doing that, because it looks great. I just might have to pay for you to come out and arrange it for me! As an aside I went to school with a kid named Dusty Miller, which has nothing to do with anything, but it always amuses me.
Good morning. I bring in greenery at Christmas to put around the nativity, but never thought to do this any time I wanted. I took your advice and clipped some for the powder room shelf I just put up. I linked this post with my post on my blog. Take a look at how delightful it looks. http://www.angiesfrugalhouse.blogspot.com Thank you.
It looks great! It’s amazing that it is cool enough for the leaves to start turning there already and the geese to be flying south! Wow!
Thank you 🙂
I love this. You are so right. All the homes that look so lovely and spare have wonderful windows and gorgeous mouldings. It often doesn’t carry over to tract homes but the greenery in clear vases looks so good in every type of home. When Country Living Magazine shot my house last year that’s exactly what they did. The stylist walked thru my garden and collected branches and greenery and put them into clear vases that had collected over the years. I don’t know why I never thought of that before. It’s a practice I’ve continued since. Brandy, your blog is just lovely. xo
